Dear Friends,

Today, let's embark on a new exploration that delves into the depths of Japanese wisdom, intertwining two essential concepts: Ikigai and Shu-Ha-Ri.

These concepts, deeply rooted in Japanese culture and philosophy, offer invaluable insights into the pursuit of purpose and mastery in our lives and endeavors.

Almost a third of our lives are spent at work. But only 20% of people are truly passionate about their jobs.

Furthermore, 45% haven't felt true happiness in over two years. And 25% have forgotten what happiness feels like (Oracle).

Our careers are crucial for our happiness and fulfillment. It's important to find work that aligns with our passions.

Ikigai and Shu Ha Ri can help us on this journey. Let's dive in and discover how.

1. Ikigai - The Essence of Being:

Ikigai, often translated as "reason for being" or "purpose in life," encapsulates the core elements that give our lives meaning and fulfillment.

It is the intersection of passion, vocation, profession, and mission, representing the essence of what drives us and makes life worth living.

Through the lens of Ikigai, we uncover the intrinsic motivation that propels us forward, guiding our actions and decisions with clarity and purpose.

How to find your Ikigai:

Finding your Ikigai is a deeply personal journey that involves self-reflection, exploration, and a willingness to embrace your passions, talents, values, and sense of purpose. Here's a detailed brief guide on how to discover your Ikigai:

  1. Reflect on Your Passions:

Start by reflecting on the activities and interests that bring you joy and fulfillment. Think about the moments when you feel most alive and engaged. What are you naturally drawn to? What activities make you lose track of time? Your passions often provide clues about what resonates deeply with your soul.

  2. Identify Your Talents and Strengths:

Take stock of your skills, talents, and strengths. What are you good at? What comes effortlessly to you? Consider both your natural abilities and the skills you've developed over time through education, training, and experience. Your talents are often indicators of where you can excel and make a meaningful impact.

  3. Consider What the World Needs:

Explore the needs and challenges of the world around you. What problems or issues do you feel passionate about addressing? How can you contribute to making a positive difference in your community or beyond? Identifying areas where your skills and passions intersect with societal needs can lead to fulfilling opportunities for contribution.

  4. Reflect on What You Can Be Paid For:

While passion and purpose are essential, it's also important to consider the practical aspect of sustaining yourself financially. Reflect on how you can leverage your skills, talents, and passions to create value in the marketplace. What products or services can you offer that people are willing to pay for? Finding alignment between what you love to do and what provides economic stability is crucial.

  5. Explore Your Values and Beliefs:

Consider your core values, beliefs, and principles. What matters most to you in life? What principles do you want to uphold in your personal and professional endeavors? Your values serve as guiding lights, shaping your decisions and actions as you navigate your journey towards Ikigai.

  6. Find the Intersection:

The essence of Ikigai lies at the intersection of passion, vocation, profession, and mission. Take time to reflect on how your passions, talents, societal needs, and economic viability intersect. Where do these elements converge? Pay attention to the areas where you experience a sense of harmony, purpose, and fulfillment.

2. Shu Ha Ri:

As you find your Ikigai, it is also great to know the Shu Ha Ri concept. "Shu Ha Ri" is a concept from Japanese martial arts, particularly Aikido, representing the stages of learning and mastery. Shu Ha Ri embodies the journey towards mastery, reflecting a progression from following to adapting and ultimately transcending.

How it Works:

  1. Shu (守) - Follow or Protect:

    • In this initial stage, practitioners diligently follow and adhere to the teachings, techniques, and traditions passed down by their instructors.

    • It involves learning the fundamental principles, rules, and forms of the art without deviation.

    • Practitioners focus on mastering the basics, often through repetition and imitation, to build a solid foundation of skills and understanding.

    • The emphasis is on discipline, obedience, and respect for the wisdom of tradition.

  2. Ha (破) - Detach or Break:

    • In the second stage, practitioners begin to diverge from strict adherence to tradition and explore variations, adaptations, and innovations.

    • They question and challenge the established norms, experimenting with different approaches, techniques, and perspectives.

    • This stage encourages creativity, flexibility, and adaptability as practitioners seek to refine and personalize their practice.

    • Practitioners may encounter setbacks and failures as they navigate this phase of exploration and discovery.

  3. Ri (離) - Transcend or Leave:

    • The final stage represents a state of transcendence, where practitioners move beyond the constraints of tradition and personal limitations.

    • They embody the essence of the art intuitively, effortlessly integrating its principles into their being.

    • Mastery is achieved not through conscious effort but through a deep intuitive understanding and embodiment of the art.

    • Practitioners become innovators and leaders in their own right, contributing to the evolution and advancement of the art.

3. Combining the Concepts:

By integrating the concept of Ikigai into your journey of self-discovery, you embark on a profound exploration of what truly drives and fulfills you. This involves identifying activities and pursuits that align harmoniously with your passions, talents, values, and the needs of the world around you. As you delve deeper into this process, you uncover your unique Ikigai - your reason for being - which serves as a guiding light for your life's path.

Once you've identified your Ikigai, the principles of Shu Ha Ri come into play as you transition from discovery to mastery. In the end of the process you become a living embodiment of your Ikigai, inspiring others through your authenticity and meaningful contribution.

Through this journey of combining Ikigai with Shu Ha Ri, you cultivate a deep sense of fulfillment, purpose, and mastery. You live a life guided by passion and purpose, continually evolving and making a positive impact on yourself and the world around you.
